Largo Bay

Largo Bay is a wide inlet on the northern shore of the Firth of Forth in Fife. Lower Largo sits on the shoreline with a small working harbour. Upper Largo lies just inland above the bay and at the foot of Largo Law, an extinct volcano rising 250 metres. The Fife Coastal Path passes the bay, linking Kincardine to Newburgh along the shore. A racehorse called Largo Bay is trained nearby and carries the bay’s name. The bay has a long history linked to fishing and smuggling in the 18th and 19th centuries. Lower Largo was once a busy fishing village with a thriving salt industry. The harbour still shelters a few small boats today. Upper Largo preserves older cottages and a church from the same period. Largo Law offers wide views across the Forth to Edinburgh on clear days. Visitors walk the coastal path for sea views and rock pools at low tide. The beach at Lower Largo is sandy and safe for children. The extinct volcano of Largo Law has a winding path to the summit. Upper Largo’s quiet streets lead to old stone houses and a village green. The racehorse Largo Bay can sometimes be seen training on nearby gallops.
