Norddeutsches Krippenmuseum

The Norddeutsches Krippenmuseum stands in the Heilig-Geist-Kirche in Güstrow, a town in the Landkreis Rostock. The church itself is a fine example of Brick Gothic architecture, built in the 14th century as a hospital and care home. It later served as a chapel for the state workhouse from 1824 to 1945. After decades as a community chapel, the building fell into disrepair and was restored between 2005 and 2007. The museum’s collection began with Mechthild Ringguth, who spent over 40 years gathering nearly 690 nativity scenes from around 70 countries. About 100 of these are displayed in the permanent exhibition, each crafted by local artists using traditional materials and reflecting their own Christian beliefs. The diversity of styles, sizes and materials makes the collection ethnologically significant. The Hedwig Steffler Museum in Münster also donated additional pieces after the museum opened. Visitors enter a space where each nativity scene tells its own story through form and craftsmanship. The church’s Gothic vaults provide a solemn backdrop to the colourful displays. Special exhibitions change regularly, often featuring loans from private collectors. The building’s history is visible in its restored brickwork and historic bell, now silent for safety. The museum continues a local tradition that began in 1993 with annual private exhibitions.
