Schloss Dornberg

Schloss Dornberg stands on a sandy mound beside an old loop of the Neckar in Groß-Gerau. The site began as a medieval motte-and-bailey water castle built by the Lords of Dornberg in the 13th century. After passing to the Counts of Katzenelnbogen it became the centre of their Upper County. The landgraves of Hesse later used it for hunting until French troops burned it in 1689 during the War of the Palatinate Succession. The castle’s polygonal core once measured fifty to fifty-five metres across and was surrounded by a wetland ditch. A round residential tower stood at its heart until the 15th century, when it was replaced by a new palace. Only fragments survived the fire: parts of the restored gatehouse, sections of the curtain wall, and the raised mound still show the original plan. Today the ruins form a quiet island amid reeds and water. The gatehouse houses the district folk high school, while the adjacent gate and curtain walls mark the limits of the outer ward. A 19th-century building nearby serves as a forestry office, and a modern extension echoes the vanished outline of the outer bailey. The site offers a clear picture of a once-strategic fortress now reclaimed by nature and gentle use.
