Protestant Christ Church Feldbach
The Christuskirche in Feldbach is a modest Protestant parish church set in the small town of Feldbach in the south-eastern corner of Styria. It stands apart from the town’s older Catholic buildings, marking the return of a Lutheran presence after centuries. The church belongs to the Evangelical Superintendentur A. B. Steiermark, the regional body for Augsburg Confession congregations. Its plain exterior hides a calm interior where light filters through coloured glass set in tall concrete uprights. The building’s story begins in 1964 when local architect Heinrich Nitsche designed the simple rectangular nave with its folded timber ceiling. Before this, worship had been held in hired rooms since 1902, and the congregation only became independent in 1948. The tower is an open concrete frame that holds the bell above the entrance, echoing the unadorned style common in Styrian churches of the 1960s. Nearby, the parish house was added in 1972, completing the modest ensemble. Inside, the nave is quiet and rectangular, its ceiling ribs giving a sense of height without ornament. The coloured panes in the concrete walls cast soft light onto the pews and the simple altar area. The church’s modest scale and unpretentious materials reflect both the post-war era in which it was built and the modest resources of a small country congregation.
