Gloria-Theater

The Gloria-Theater is a theatre and event space in central Cologne, originally opened as a cinema in 1956. It sits on Apostelnstraße near Neumarkt, close to the Basilica of the Holy Apostles. The building combines a theatre space with a café and hosts a wide range of performances and gatherings. Its design still reflects its cinema past, with neon signs and red velvet seating. The Gloria has evolved from a single-screen cinema into a modern multi-purpose venue. The theatre has played a notable role in Cologne’s cultural life since the 1950s. It began with films like Engagement at Wolfgangsee and plays featuring Gérard Philipe. In the 1970s it showed adult films, and later became known for hosting gay and lesbian events. Performers such as Hella von Sinnen and The Kelly Family appeared there, and parts of films like Der bewegte Mann were shot inside. Since its 2000 renovation, it has hosted concerts, comedy festivals, readings and TV shows like NightWash. Visitors find a theatre space that can hold up to 400 seated or 950 standing guests, alongside an 80-seat café. The entrance retains its 1950s cinema style with neon lettering and a ticket kiosk. Inside, red velvet seating and classic décor create a nostalgic atmosphere. The venue continues to serve Cologne’s cultural and social scene, acting as a meeting point for performances and parties.
