Altes Schloss
The Altes Schloss stands on Schlossberg above the spa town of Bad Berneck in Upper Franconia. Built in the Gothic style towards the end of the High Middle Ages, it served as an Amtsburg, a local administrative centre. The ruined keep remains the town’s emblem, visible from the market square below. A historic road, the Via Imperii, once climbed the hillside beside the castle. Nearby lie the ruins of Hohenberneck Castle and the motte of Alt-Berneck, adding to the area’s medieval landscape. The castle’s origins trace back to the Walpote family, first recorded in 1168. Their early stronghold, Walpotenburg, stood illegally on Bamberg church land and was later moved to the site of Hohenberneck. By 1203 the Walpotes had vanished from records, but their brief rule shaped the region’s history. The castle’s decline began long ago, leaving only the keep as a reminder of its past power. Historians such as Hellmut Kunstmann have studied its rise and fall in detail. Visitors reach the ruins by a short walk from the town’s outskirts. The open-air stage to the north offers a view of the keep towering above. From the summit, the surrounding countryside stretches out in every direction. The nearby ruins of Hohenberneck and Alt-Berneck can be reached in minutes. The site remains accessible at all times, inviting quiet exploration of its stone walls and views.
