St Paul Parish Church, Grange-over-Sands

St Paul Parish Church stands on Crown Hill in Grange-over-Sands, a small town on the Cartmel Peninsula in Cumbria. It is an active Anglican church, part of a united benefice that includes six other churches across the peninsula. The building is listed at Grade II on the National Heritage List for England, recognising its special architectural interest. The church began as a modest structure in 1852–53, funded by an appeal from Sarah Anne Clarke of Liverpool. Early additions included north and south aisles in the 1860s, followed by a lengthened chancel and new organ chamber in the 1870s. The church’s design reflects successive phases of growth and adaptation. Built from limestone with sandstone dressings and slate roofs, it features a nave, aisles, a south porch, and a chancel with a polygonal apse. A small bell turret with a stone spirelet rises at the west end. Inside, five-bay arcades rest on marble piers with sandstone capitals, and a wooden font is visible. The east window in the south chapel, designed by S. Evans in 1888, is one of the church’s notable features. The two-manual pipe organ, built in 1873 by William Hill and Son, was restored in 1933. Visitors find a quiet place of worship with a sense of layered history. The interior shows changes from the 19th and 20th centuries, including reordering in the 1950s and additions by Lancaster architects Austin and Paley in the 1930s. The stained glass windows, some by Shrigley and Hunt or Abbott and Company, add colour and detail. The church remains an active part of the local community, continuing to serve the parish long after its foundation.
