Camas Tuath

Camas Tuath is a quiet inlet on the Ross of Mull, an arm of land pointing south from the Isle of Mull. Two small tidal islands guard the bay, and two stone cottages stand beside the shore. The Iona Community runs an adventure camp in these cottages, reached by a two-and-a-half-kilometre walk across open moorland or by small boat. Guests take part in activities such as kayaking, coasteering, abseiling and raft building. Arts and crafts and juggling sessions are also offered, alongside fishing and hill-walking. The centre keeps an organic garden that has been tended by different gardeners over the years. Near the shore two polytunnels shelter lettuce, tomatoes and other vegetables. A little higher up, seaweed beds grow carrots and other hardy crops, while herbs and sometimes fruit grow in the open plots. A willow igloo and a hidden shed sit among the beds, and a round house with a central fire pit crowns the garden. Two buildings more than a century and a half old form the Camas Centre. After careful renovation they reopened in 2006 with mains water, a small wind turbine and a composting toilet system that uses worms. Up to twenty-eight guests arrive each week for activity weeks, garden weeks or open weeks. The path and the site are now safe and welcoming once more.
