Filialkirche hl. Georg, Eugendorf

The Filialkirche Kirchberg stands in the Kirchberg district of Eugendorf, a village in the Salzburg countryside. It is a small medieval church with later additions, set on a hill that has been settled for centuries. A carved stone slab on the south-east wall shows a Celtic woman in Roman dress, hinting at the site’s ancient past. Once a castle belonging to the Steinkirchen family, the building became a chapel around 1390 and was enlarged into a single-nave Gothic church by 1500. The tower was raised in 1698–99 and again after a fire in 1917, giving it its present shape. The church is worth visiting for its well-preserved interior and the story it tells. The high altar, carved by Meinrad Guggenbichler in 1707, features a figure of Saint George flanked by statues of Saints Florian and Leopold. A Rococo tabernacle was added in 1740, and the altarpiece shows Saint Lawrence with his attributes. Six paintings on the west gallery rail depict episodes from the life and martyrdom of Saint George, dated 1641. The walls also hold fourteen Stations of the Cross and a pulpit with a crucifix. Visitors find a quiet hilltop church surrounded by open fields. Inside, the Gothic ribbed vault and the Baroque furnishings stand side by side. The west gallery displays its painted panels clearly, and the tower rises above the nave. Near the church lies the grave of Max Reischl, a local entrepreneur whose foundation still works from the area. Each year the Georgiritt, a traditional horse procession, ends here, and a Kranzlstechen, a ring-tilting contest, takes place in the meadows below.
