Ruislip tube station

Ruislip station stands on Station Approach in the London Borough of Hillingdon. It serves as an interchange between the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines on the Uxbridge branch, positioned between Ickenham and Ruislip Manor. Opened on 4 July 1904 by the Metropolitan Railway, it was the only intermediate stop on the new line between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Uxbridge. Electric trains began running from 1 January 1905 after the tracks were electrified. The station’s wide formation was designed to allow extra tracks, though these were never built. In 1910, District line services reached Ruislip via a connection at Rayners Lane, but Piccadilly line trains took over in 1933. The station is notable for its role in London’s transport history and its operational quirks. It remains the oldest station on the Uxbridge branch of the Metropolitan line. Trains can be reversed here using a siding leading to Ruislip Depot, though this causes delays and is mostly limited to peak-hour Piccadilly line services. Only the eastbound platform has step-free access, while passengers heading west must use the footbridge or change at other stations. A £200 million investment was announced in 2018 to make the station fully accessible. The station also features a goods yard to the north and a former crossover to the east, remnants of its earlier layout. Visitors find a functional station with two platforms serving the Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines. The eastbound platform connects to Central London, while the westbound platform leads towards Uxbridge. A footbridge links the platforms, though it lacks step-free access to the westbound side. The station building sits on Station Approach, surrounded by residential streets in Ruislip. London buses serve the station day and night, providing onward connections. Nearby stations include Ruislip Manor, Ruislip Gardens, South Ruislip, and West Ruislip, each part of the same local network.
