Großer Sulzberg

The Great Sulzberg stands at 1 400 metres above sea level as the highest summit of the Türnitzer Alps in Lower Austria. It rises north of Hubertus Lake and about four kilometres south of Annaberg. The mountain’s northern slope belongs to Annaberg while its southern slope reaches almost fourteen kilometres east to the market town of Sankt Aegyd am Neuwalde. The ridge that runs west to east marks the municipal boundary. The partly open ridge gives a wide view that stretches from the Schneeberg to the Göller and as far as the Gesäuse. No marked trail leads to the top, so the peak sees few visitors and has earned the name ‘hidden goal for pathfinders’. The easiest route climbs from Fadental in the south along forest roads and unmarked hunting paths in about two hours. Routes from the Säbel saddle in the west and from Ulreichsberg in the east follow longer hunting paths or faint tracks and demand more sense of direction. In winter the mountain attracts ski tourers and snowshoe hikers because avalanche danger is low along most of the ascent through woodland. Fadental again serves as the best starting point for these trips. The open crest offers sweeping views across the surrounding ranges on clear days.
