Konrad Adenauer head (Bonn)

The Konrad-Adenauer-Denkmal stands on the Bundeskanzlerplatz in Bonn, a bronze head sculpture created by Hubertus von Pilgrim in 1981. It sits before the former federal chancellery along the Adenauerallee pedestrian path. The two-metre-high portrait head depicts Adenauer in realistic style and rests on a stone pedestal. The rear of the sculpture features relief panels illustrating key moments in his life and career. The monument was unveiled on 26 May 1982 with President Karl Carstens and Chancellor Helmut Schmidt present. Its bronze reliefs include a cross for his Christian faith, the Cologne Cathedral for his years as mayor, and the Prussian eagle for his role as president of the Prussian State Council. Other panels recall his opposition to the Nazi dictatorship, his reconciliation work in Reims, and the rose stock symbolising Germany’s rebirth. Visitors find the head turned slightly towards the Rhine and the Siebengebirge hills, linking Adenauer to his home region. Nearby stands the former chancellery building, adding political weight to the setting. The sculpture is among Bonn’s most photographed landmarks and remains a quiet place to reflect on post-war German leadership.
