A40 road

The A40 is a major road running from London to Fishguard in Wales, passing through Gloucestershire. It follows a historic route that once linked London with Cheltenham and Gloucester before motorways took over much of that role. Parts of the road were once managed by turnpike trusts in the early 18th century, showing its long-standing importance. The road’s route has changed many times. In 1937 it became part of the London–Fishguard trunk road, and sections were rerouted to bypass towns like Oxford and Gloucester. Later bypasses at Monmouth, Brecon and Carmarthen improved traffic flow, while dual carriageways were built where needed. A drive along the A40 offers varied scenery. West of Oxford it passes through quiet countryside before reaching the Wye Valley’s scenic landscapes. Near Monmouth the road tunnels through hills, and in Wales it runs close to the Brecon Beacons. The road also passes through towns like Cheltenham and Carmarthen, where it meets other routes.
