Kriegerdenkmal Zieko

The Kriegerdenkmal Zieko stands in the village of Zieko, part of Coswig in Saxony-Anhalt. It is set on the cemetery in front of the 12th-century Sankt-Johannes-Kirche, a romanesque building with a round-arched portal. The monument was designed by local stone-mason Michael Schubert in 2013 after the parish council asked for a design that would fit the churchyard. Schubert’s winning proposal used the same round-arch motif found on the church, placing a granite cross beneath it. The stone is beige to cognac-coloured sandstone, cut from a single quarry layer so the colour stays even. The monument is worth seeing for its thoughtful craftsmanship and the stories it tells. Schubert created three drafts and chose the one that echoed the church’s arches. The granite cross, already in place, pierces the arch both above and below, a compromise forced by its existing size. On the left side a pickelhaube symbolises the First World War, on the right a steel helmet the Second. Both helmets show visible tool marks to show they were hand-worked. The names of the fallen from both wars are carved on bronze plates beneath the cross, along with two civilians who died resisting violence in 1945. Visitors find a three-metre-wide sandstone wall two and a half metres tall. The lower part of the plinth is rough-bossed, while inscribed areas are smoothed to make the lettering stand out. The arches are profiled, the cornices ground smooth, and small slabs raised slightly. The left helmet sits on a small added pedestal, the right on its own block. Behind the monument the cemetery slopes gently toward the church’s round-arched door. The whole piece balances simplicity with quiet dignity, inviting a moment of reflection among the graves.
