Leopoldsteinersee

The Leopoldsteinersee is a mountain lake in Styria, east of Austria, about four kilometres northwest of Eisenerz. It lies at 628 metres above sea level at the foot of the Seemauer in the western Hochschwab range. The lake stretches 1,400 metres long and 370 metres wide, with a maximum depth of 31 metres. It is fed mainly by underground springs, though the river Seebach also contributes. The surrounding landscape features rugged mountains covered in mixed and coniferous forests. Local legend tells of a water sprite caught near the lake who bargained for freedom by revealing iron deposits at Erzberg. After showing the location, the sprite vanished into a water hole. The lake’s clear waters and steep banks create a quiet, secluded atmosphere. A three-kilometre hiking trail circles the shore, offering views of the water and surrounding peaks. Rowing and electric boats can be hired locally, adding to the lake’s appeal for visitors. The path around the lake winds through dense woodland, with rocky outcrops rising sharply above the water. The contrast between the dark forests and the bright lake surface gives the place a distinctive character. On calm days, the reflections of the mountains appear almost perfect in the still water. The trail is well marked and suitable for walkers of all levels. At the water’s edge, small pebble beaches offer spots to rest and enjoy the view. The area remains peaceful even in summer, making it a favoured retreat for those seeking quiet in the Alps.
