Gurksee

The Gurksee is a small mountain lake high in the Gurktal Alps of Carinthia. It lies within the Gurkursprung nature reserve on the border of the municipalities of Albeck. The lake is one of two source lakes for the Gurk River, which flows north to the Danube. It sits at 1,970 metres above sea level, surrounded by rugged alpine meadows and steep slopes. Despite its small size—only 0.4 hectares—Gurksee is scientifically important. Its waters are cold and low in nutrients, supporting little plant or animal life. The lake freezes solid each winter, so no fish live in its waters. Scientists have recorded sparse algae and plankton species such as Gymnodinium and Trachelomonas planctonica. The lake bed is made of iron-rich schist, giving the water a distinctive character. Visitors reach Gurksee along narrow mountain paths that climb through alpine pastures. The surroundings are quiet and open, with no buildings or roads nearby. The lake’s shallow waters reflect the sky on calm days, while the surrounding rocks and sparse vegetation show the harsh conditions at this altitude. The silence is broken only by wind or the occasional call of a bird. The scene offers a rare glimpse of an undisturbed alpine environment far from human activity.
