Burg Münch

Burg Münch stands in Münchenbernsdorf, a town in Thüringen’s Greiz district. It began as a 12th-century water fortress built by the Münch family to guard the Regensburger Straße. The family kept the castle until 1585, after which it became a moated château in the 16th and 18th centuries. Later neglect led to decay, and in 1965 the authorities demolished most of the structure despite objections from heritage bodies. Today only a single arched gateway and a small adjoining sandstone building remain. The surviving fragments show the scale and style of the former water castle. A quiet lane called Schlossstraße runs past the site, marking where the moat once lay. The remaining buildings are plain but carry the weight of seven centuries of history. Visitors find a modest stone arch standing beside a low sandstone house. The spot is peaceful, with no crowds or modern distractions. A few information boards explain what once stood on the spot. The place offers a quiet reminder of how medieval defences evolved into Renaissance pleasure palaces before finally disappearing.
