Fernmeldeturm Lamstedt

The Fernmeldeturm Lamstedt is a tall communications tower standing in the rural district of Lamstedt, part of Lower Saxony. It rises in the village of Wohlenbeck, about 750 metres from the B495 federal road. The structure belongs to the Deutsche Funkturm group and follows a standard design used across Germany. Originally built to a height of 171 metres, it now measures 138 metres after the glass-fibre cylinder at the top was removed. Despite its size, it no longer carries television or radio transmitters. The tower is one of the tallest of its type in the country and serves mainly as a relay point for microwave links. Its red aviation warning lights make it visible on clear nights from several surrounding villages. In winter, when the trees are bare, the silhouette can be spotted from Abbenseth, about five kilometres away. The lights also reach Iselersheim, roughly ten kilometres distant, marking the tower’s presence across the flat landscape. Visitors find a plain concrete shaft topped by a smaller equipment cabin. The base sits in open farmland, with few buildings nearby. There are no public viewing platforms or exhibits, but the tower itself makes a striking landmark against the horizon. The surrounding area offers quiet country roads for walking and cycling, with views that stretch far on clear days. The tower’s night-time glow adds a subtle glow to the winter sky.
