Pfarrkirche Ludweis

The Catholic parish church of Saint Ägyd stands at the eastern end of the village green in Ludweis, a small market town in the Waidhofen an der Thaya district of Lower Austria. The present building replaced an earlier chapel first recorded in the middle of the 12th century and moved to its present site in 1353. In 1786 the church became a parish attached to Altenburg Abbey and was restored in 1928. The simple Baroque church has a west tower with round-headed louvres and a curved pyramid roof. Above the rectangular doorway is a double coat of arms dated 1655, and the upper part of the tower was added in 1835. Inside, the nave is barrel-vaulted and the narrower chancel, with its five-sided apse, has ribbed vaulting. A north sacristy was added later, and in 1949 the flat-arched windows were renewed. The furnishings include a neobaroque high altar with a crowned niche holding a statue of Saint Ägydius and a side altar decorated with a heart of Jesus. The 1831 Stations of the Cross hang on the walls, and the red-marble Gothic Revival font dates from 1912. A wooden gallery houses a 1930 organ built by Josef Huber, its case matching the arcade balustrade.
