Dornoch Firth

The Dornoch Firth is a narrow inlet on Scotland’s east coast, separating Sutherland to the north from Ross and Cromarty to the south. It forms part of a national scenic area covering nearly sixteen square kilometres of land and sea, where rounded granite hills rise above heather moor and wooded slopes. Oakwoods grow along the lower hills, mixed with plantations that range from Skibo Castle’s ornamental trees to the pines of Struie Forest. The firth shares its boundaries with Loch Fleet as a Special Protection Area, safeguarding important bird populations. It also forms a Special Area of Conservation with Morrich More, protecting salt meadows, dunes and coastal grasslands. The firth is known for its wildlife, hosting significant numbers of breeding ospreys and overwintering waders. Flocks of bar-tailed godwits, greylag geese and wigeons gather here each winter alongside curlews, dunlins and oystercatchers. Otters and harbour seals move through the salt meadows and dune heathlands that line the shore. The firth’s narrow shape and varied habitats create ideal conditions for these species. Scottish Natural Heritage noted in 2010 how the area contains a surprising variety of landscapes within its small compass. A modern bridge carries the A9 road across the firth, shortening journeys between Inverness and Thurso. Before the bridge opened in 1991, traffic had to cross at Bonar Bridge at the firth’s head. In 1809, the Meikle Ferry disaster claimed ninety-nine lives when an overloaded boat sank near the southern shore. Today, visitors can walk the shoreline paths or drive the bridge to enjoy views of the firth’s changing tides and wildlife.
