River Irwell

The River Irwell is a 63-kilometre tributary of the Mersey in north-west England. It begins on Deerplay Moor near Bacup and flows south through towns like Rawtenstall, Bury and Radcliffe. The river forms part of the boundary between Manchester and Salford before joining the Manchester Ship Canal near Irlam. Its lower stretches were canalised in the 17th and 18th centuries to create the Mersey and Irwell Navigation. The river’s course changed again in the late 19th century with the opening of the Manchester Ship Canal, which turned Manchester and Salford into a major inland port. The Irwell has played a key role in the region’s industrial and ecological history. During the Industrial Revolution, heavy pollution from factories killed off most wildlife, but efforts in the 20th and 21st centuries have restored fish populations and improved water quality. Initiatives like the River Irwell Flood Defence Scheme and oxygen injection systems at Salford Quays have helped revive the river. Today, it supports roach, bream, chub and even brown trout, along with birds such as herons, kingfishers and diving ducks. Two Sites of Special Scientific Interest lie along its banks, protecting rare flora and geological features. Visitors can explore the Irwell’s varied landscapes, from moorland headwaters to urban waterfronts. In its upper reaches, the river winds through steep Pennine valleys and pastures rich in limestone grassland. Near Bolton, Moses Gate Country Park and Nob End offer walking trails and wildlife spotting. In Salford, Clifton Country Park and Kersal Dale Country Park provide green spaces along the riverbanks. The Manchester Ship Canal at Salford Quays is a hub for pleasure cruises and waterside regeneration, while the river itself remains a popular spot for rowing, fishing and riverside strolls.
