The Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft

The Trolleybus Museum at Sandtoft stands on part of the former RAF Sandtoft airfield in North Lincolnshire. The museum occupies a flat site near the village of Sandtoft on the Isle of Axholme. It began in 1969 when volunteers took over a disused wartime airfield. Over the years they built workshops, depots and an exhibition hall. The first public event, the Sandtoft Gathering, took place in 1971 and still runs every year. The museum holds the largest collection of preserved trolleybuses in Europe. More than sixty vehicles are on display, most from British systems but with growing numbers from overseas. A 1950s/1960s street scene shows shop fronts filled with period goods. A prefab bungalow has been fitted out as a period home to display domestic items from the trolleybus era. Visitors can walk past rows of restored trolleybuses in the depot buildings. An oval two-way circuit allows some vehicles to give short rides on open days. The Axholme Stores exhibition hall now contains a café where people can rest. Outside, the flat airfield gives wide views across the Lincolnshire countryside.
