Schloss Krumpendorf

Schloss Krumpendorf stands beside Lake Wörther in the southern Austrian province of Kärnten. Built between 1735 and 1740 for Ursula von Schluga, it was later enlarged in 1820–21 under Thaddäus von Lanner, who added an extra storey and refaced the building. Since 1952 the estate has belonged to the Austrian Trade Union Federation and serves as a training centre. The three-storey structure has a plain façade with three wide bays and two narrower ones, topped by a high hipped roof. Inside, the ground-floor hall is spanned by a barrel vault with lunettes and transverse ribs. A marble Renaissance doorframe from Limmersach, originally part of a fireplace surround, now frames an interior door. Upstairs, the so-called Frauenzimmer shows fine inlaid wood flooring. Outside, a Baroque iron grille from Silberegg guards the eastern approach. East of the main building stand two former farm buildings, one raised in 1823, the other rebuilt in 1827. To the north, across the road, Lanner laid out an English park in 1828 as part of an agricultural trial garden. A small garden pavilion painted in 1891 with a classical gable and a fresco of Pomona overlooks the lawn. Roman relics dot the grounds: a shallow stone basin fountain and two grave inscriptions from the nearby Roman town of Virunum flank the park’s stone staircases.
