Schlütersiel memorial

The Schlütersiel-Denkmal stands in Berne, a village in the Wesermarsch district. It dates from the early 20th century and is protected as a listed monument. The site recalls an older sluice built in 1750, which once drained the Schlüter Sieltief into the Hunte. The monument’s centrepiece is a wall of rough-hewn stone blocks. A round-arched niche holds a seat, flanked by pilasters, and above it a segmental arch frames a carved relief of the old sluice, marked with a monogram and coat of arms. Behind the wall runs a stretch of the original Schlüter dyke, about 50 metres long. A little to the southwest, the modern bridge carries a matching stone relief and inscription. Visitors see the 1926 structure set beside the riverbank, with the Hunte flowing past. The reliefs and inscriptions explain the sluice’s role in local drainage and the 1285 battle nearby. The calm riverside setting and the solid masonry give a quiet sense of the place’s long history.
