Niederösterreich’s last pearl-milling workshop stands in the quiet village of Felling, beside the Thaya river. The building, a modest brick structure, houses a family-run business that has shaped mother-of-pearl since 1911. Once part of a thriving network of workshops across the region, it now remains alone, its six to eight craftspeople keeping centuries-old skills alive. Every year the mill processes about twenty tonnes of shells imported from Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand and Australia. The workshop still turns out roughly 2.5 million buttons annually, alongside newer lines of jewellery and decorative objects. The company was founded by Rudolf Marchart, who began by using local river shells gathered from the Thaya and March. After the Second World War Austria counted ninety-eight such workshops; plastic buttons steadily replaced pearl ones, reducing both numbers and payrolls. Yet the Marchart family resisted the trend, investing instead in new designs while retaining hand-turned lathes and hand-polishing wheels. Their annual turnover reaches about 400 000 euros, proving that small-scale craft can still find markets among national and international fashion houses and shirt-makers. Visitors step into a single large room where the scent of shell dust lingers in the air. Along one wall a dozen treadle lathes stand ready for use, their brass fittings gleaming. Piles of iridescent blanks wait beside bins of finished buttons sorted by size and colour. Workbenches hold jigs for drilling button holes and trays of silver findings for the newer jewellery line. Through a connecting door a smaller space displays finished pieces—cufflinks, pendants and inlaid boxes—each labelled with the maker’s mark. Outside, the Thaya flows past orchards and vineyards, a quiet backdrop to a living workshop that has outlasted its rivals.
