Rathgeber Monument: Era of Friendship

The Rathgeber-Denkmal Ära der Freundschaft stands in Gotha, a town in central Germany’s Thüringen region. A classical column with three sculpted sides, it was designed in 1824 by Johann Balthasar Jacob Rathgeber for the prince’s pleasure garden. The work was commissioned by Duke Friedrich IV and originally placed in what is now a small-garden allotment. After decades outdoors, the original marble panels deteriorated and were replaced first by sandstone then by faithful reconstructions. In 2023 the restored monument was moved to the grounds of Schloss Friedenstein, near the Orangerie parterre. The three relief panels depict pairs of mythological friends: Castor and Pollux, Orestes and Pylades, Achilles and Patroclus. A critic writing in 1824 felt the figures were too elaborate for the limited space. The base bears the inscription ‘I. RATHGEBER INVENIT ET FECIT MDCCCXXIV’, recording the artist’s name and the year. The column itself is protected as a cultural monument, recognising its historical importance. Its reinstallation in the palace park completes a long process of care and reinterpretation. Visitors now find the column standing on a gravel path among clipped yews and lawns. Each side faces a different garden compartment, allowing the reliefs to be viewed in sequence. The reconstructed marble panels catch the light, making the figures stand out against the pale stone. Labels beside the monument explain the stories of the three pairs, linking classical antiquity to the duke’s Enlightenment ideals. The setting is quiet, shaded by lime trees, so the monument can be studied at leisure.
