Barton Swing Aqueduct

The Barton Swing Aqueduct carries the Bridgewater Canal over the Manchester Ship Canal near Barton upon Irwell in Greater Manchester. It is the first and only swing aqueduct in the world, designed by Sir Edward Leader Williams and built by Andrew Handyside and Company of Derby. The structure opened in 1894 and remains in regular use, allowing both narrowboats and large vessels to pass. It replaced an earlier masonry aqueduct completed in 1761, which could no longer accommodate the height of ships using the new ship canal. The new aqueduct was built on a small island in the ship canal, requiring the River Irwell to be temporarily diverted during construction. The aqueduct is a Grade II* listed building and a major feat of Victorian civil engineering. Its 330-foot iron trough rotates 90 degrees on a pivot to let ships pass underneath, while retaining around 800 tonnes of water. The turning mechanism uses a hydraulic system powered by steam boilers and later by electric pumps. The structure was pushing the limits of engineering when built, causing the original cast-iron rollers to deform and the bridge to drop by 8.89 cm by 1927. Steel rollers were installed in 1928, reducing the drop to just 2.4 mm. Visitors find the aqueduct next to the Barton Road Swing Bridge, both operated from a brick control tower on the central island. The aqueduct’s suspended towpath has been removed, but the control tower and turning mechanism remain visible. The structure lines up with the road bridge when open, allowing ships to pass on either side. The brick pumping station on the Eccles bank once supplied hydraulic power, and its culvert runs beneath the canal bed. The site is a working example of industrial engineering, still handling regular traffic after more than a century.
