Burgstall Kaplinz

Burgstall Kaplinz stands on a spur between Owingen and Hohenbodman in the Bodenseekreis. It is one of the largest abandoned hilltop sites in the district, grouped with Leonegg, Falkenhalden and Schlossbühl. All four were built on spurs with similar layouts, though Kaplinz has no standing masonry left. The site’s earthworks remain clear. A shallow neck ditch separates it from the northern plateau, while a deep sectional ditch cuts off a roughly trapezoid plateau. Beyond that lies a higher circular area protected by a curved ditch and rampart wrapping around the spur. The flanks drop away steeply compared with the other sites. No written records confirm the castle’s name or history. Alois Schneider suggests it may have belonged to the Ramsberg knights mentioned in 1222. The local name Kap Linz or Kapelle Linz is unexplained. Visitors walk the grassy ramparts and ditches, seeing how the spurs and slopes shaped the defences.
