Eas Fors

Eas Fors is a waterfall on the island of Mull in the Inner Hebrides. It stands on the Ardow Burn south of the village of Dervaig. Another waterfall with the same name lies on the west coast near Ulva Ferry. The name itself repeats the idea, since eas is the Gaelic word for waterfall and fors the Old Norse equivalent. The burn carries the falls down a series of rocky steps into a deep pool below. The falls are reached by a short walk from the roadside parking area. The path follows the burn through woodland where ferns and mosses cling to the rocks. In spate the water roars over the lip of the falls, throwing up spray that catches the light. On quieter days the flow is gentler, revealing the striped bedrock beneath. Visitors find a viewpoint close to the road that gives a clear sight of the cascade. The surrounding hills rise steeply, covered in heather and grass. The air carries the scent of damp earth and pine. On clear mornings the falls catch the early sun, turning the water to liquid silver.
