Dammersfeldkuppe

The Dammersfeldkuppe stands at 927.9 m above sea level in the High Rhön range, part of the Rhön low mountain system shared by Bavaria, Hesse and Thuringia. Its dome lies in Bavaria just 200 m southeast of the Hesse border, close to the towns of Gersfeld, Bad Brückenau and Wildflecken. The entire mountain sits within the Wildflecken Military Training Area, yet it is also surrounded by the Bavarian Rhön Nature Park and Rhön Biosphere Reserve. The Rhine–Weser watershed crosses the summit, with the Schmalnau rising on the northern flank and the Kleine Sinn on the southern. The peak is normally closed to the public because of military use, but an annual summer walk allows access on set routes. This tradition began with US forces and continues under the Bundeswehr after their departure in 1994. During the event, walkers can cross the restricted terrain and reach the summit along designated paths. The event offers a rare chance to experience the otherwise inaccessible landscape and views from the second highest Rhön peak. Visitors on the annual walk find open grassland summits and sweeping views across the High Rhön. The paths lead through heath and meadow, with clear markers guiding the route. On the northern side the Schmalnau’s headwaters trickle down, while the Kleine Sinn begins its journey southward. The contrast between the military zone and the protected nature reserve creates a striking setting. The event also passes near abandoned villages once resettled for the training area.
