Mölltal

The Mölltal is a valley in the Austrian province of Kärnten. The river Möll flows through it from its source near the Pasterzenboden below the Grossglockner. The valley separates mountain groups: the Schobergruppe from the Goldberggruppe in its upper section, the Goldberggruppe from the Kreuzeckgruppe in the middle, and the Kreuzeckgruppe from the Ankogelgruppe near its lower end. The Mölltal was once a key route south because all traffic between the Böckstein car shuttle and Mallnitz passed through it before the Tauern motorway opened. Today the valley sees far less traffic, making it quieter for visitors. The Möllschlucht gorge near Heiligenblut offers a challenging Klettersteig graded D, running along the walls and crossing the gorge on several rope bridges. The upper valley’s steep sides and high peaks frame narrow roads and small settlements. At Obervellach the valley opens into the Lurnfeld, already part of the Drautal. Side valleys branch off along the Möll’s course, each with its own character and views of the surrounding ranges.
