Marienthal
Marienthal is a leafy district in the Wandsbek borough of Hamburg. It lies between Jenfeld to the east, Eilbek to the north-west and Horn to the south, with Hamm beyond. Once a separate village, it became part of Wandsbek in 1878 yet kept its own name. The area still feels like a quiet suburb thanks to its detached houses and generous green spaces. The district’s history goes back to 1762, when Heinrich Carl Graf von Schimmelmann built a castle and park on the land. In 1861 the speculator Johann Anton Wilhelm von Carstenn bought the estate, demolished the castle and laid out building plots. Carstenn named the new suburb after his daughter Marie. He also pushed for the railway line through Marienthal to help sell the plots as desirable villas. Visitors find broad tree-lined streets and the last remnant of the old castle garden, the Marienanlage. The Wandsbek Gehölz, a long wooded strip saved from development, offers walking paths. The Asklepios Klinik Wandsbek and Christuskirche stand here, and the S-Bahn at Wandsbek Markt connects the district to central Hamburg.
