St Mary's Church, Whitegate

St Mary’s Church stands on a hillside above the village of Whitegate in Cheshire, its brick walls and tiled roof set against a screen of trees. The present building replaces earlier structures that dated back to the 13th century, when Cistercian monks first built a chapel here. The name Whitegate recalls the gatehouse of Vale Royal Abbey, whose monks were known as the white monks. Repairs were recorded in the early 17th century, and by 1715 the church had become a wooden and plaster ruin. In 1728 it was rebuilt in brick with wider aisles and galleries, and in the 1870s Lord Delamere paid for a further rebuilding under the architect John Douglas. The church’s exterior is largely the work of John Douglas, who raised the nave walls and added a small tower with an octagonal shingled spire. Inside, the octagonal timber piers survive from the earlier Perpendicular church, and the chancel arcades date from 1876–77. Eight tubular bells were installed to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, and a medieval bell was given by Thomas Cholmondeley in 1810. Parish registers begin in 1559, and the churchyard holds war graves of two soldiers and a Royal Air Force officer from the Second World War. A pair of gateposts topped with balls, dated 1736, mark the entrance, and the iron gates were donated in memory of Miss Emily Katherine Cholmondeley. The churchyard slopes gently away from the building, offering views across the surrounding countryside. The interior is quiet and spacious, with light falling through clear windows onto the retained piers and the 1870s arcades. The combination of Douglas’s Victorian work and the older fabric creates a calm, reflective atmosphere.
