Schloss Stübach stands in Stübach, a village that belongs to the Diespeck municipality in the Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim district of Mittelfranken, Bavaria. It was once a medieval castle complex, now vanished except for buried remains. The site once held two castles built by the Abenberg knights around the 14th century. One was destroyed in 1462 and later handed to the Crailsheim family. The second, at the southern edge of the village with the Ungerhof farm as its economic centre, suffered damage during the 1525 Peasants’ War. The castle’s early owners, the Abenberg knights, acted as local lords under the Würzburg bishop, who held authority over the Rangau and Steigerwald regions. By the 14th century, the Hohenlohe family also held extensive estates in Stübach. The Crailsheims are still recorded as castle owners in 1544, though ruins remained visible until the 19th century. Today, the site is recognised as a protected archaeological monument. Visitors find a quiet rural setting where only earthworks and buried foundations mark the castle’s former presence. The surrounding farmland and village lanes offer a peaceful walk through a landscape shaped by medieval power struggles. No grand structures remain above ground, but the area retains a sense of its layered past. The Ungerhof farm, once part of the southern complex, still stands nearby as a reminder of the estate’s organisation. The site invites reflection on the vanished medieval world that once defined this place.
