Schloss Rosenburg

Schloss Rosenburg stands above the town of Riedenburg in Lower Bavaria, on a ridge in the Altmühltal valley. The medieval castle was built in the late 12th century by members of the Babonen family, who held titles as burggraves of Regensburg and counts of Riedenburg. After passing through several noble hands, it was repeatedly damaged during wars in the 16th and 17th centuries. The well-preserved complex now houses a museum and a falconry centre founded in 1978. The castle’s long history is reflected in its ownership changes and military roles. It was seized by peasants in 1525, rebuilt between 1556 and 1560, and later occupied by Austrian forces in the 18th century. The site also served as a winter quarters for troops during the Austrian War of Succession in 1745. Today the falconry displays and guided tours offer visitors a chance to see the restored buildings and learn about its past. Visitors enter through the courtyard, where falconry shows take place. Inside, the museum occupies part of the castle, while the cellar serves as a restaurant. The surrounding Altmühltal nature park provides scenic walks along the valley, with views of the limestone cliffs and the winding river below. The castle’s stone walls and towers remain largely intact, giving a clear sense of its medieval origins.
