Aberuchill Castle

Aberuchill Castle stands three kilometres west of Comrie in Perthshire, a 17th-century tower house enlarged and reshaped in the 19th century. The original block is protected as a category A listed building, while the surrounding grounds appear in Scotland’s Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes. The estate traces its name to 1596 when the lands were granted to the Campbells of Lawers. The castle passed to the Drummonds in 1642 and they added a Gothic east wing and remodelled interiors early in the 19th century. In 1858 Sir David Dundas sold it to cotton merchant George Dewhurst, who commissioned Aberdeen architect Robert Ewan to build the west wing between 1869 and 1874. A suffragette fire in 1914 destroyed much of the structure, yet servants escaped unharmed. Visitors find the restored tower house and its 19th-century wings set within a designed landscape of three thousand acres. The protected interiors still show the Drummonds’ Gothic detailing and the later Edwardian refinements. The estate remains privately owned, its sweeping grounds offering quiet walks through wooded policies and open parkland.
