Burgruine Eppenstein

Burg Eppenstein stands as the ruined remains of a medieval spur castle in the Upper Styria mountains. It rises 736 metres above the valley, commanding views over an old trade route that once linked the Mur valley with Carinthia. Built around the year 1000, it served as the main stronghold of the Eppenstein family, who ruled as Styrian margraves and briefly held the Duchy of Carinthia. The first written record of the castle appears in a deed from 1160, though the family’s power began earlier, with Margrave Adalbero becoming Duke of Carinthia in 1012. The castle’s strategic position made it a prize in medieval conflicts. After the Eppensteins died out in 1122, their lands passed to the Ottokar family of Styria. King Ottokar II of Bohemia seized it in 1260 as part of his campaign to control Styria. Later, after his defeat in 1278, the fortress changed hands repeatedly. By the late 15th century it was rebuilt in Gothic style, only to be taken by King Matthias Corvinus in 1482 and then left to decay. Visitors today find grassy mounds and crumbling walls scattered across the hilltop. Sections of the old keep and curtain walls still stand, showing the castle’s once strong defences. The site offers wide views across the surrounding Alps and down into the valleys below. A short walk from the village of Eppenstein leads to the ruins, where the remains of towers and gateways hint at the castle’s former size. The peaceful hilltop contrasts with the turbulent history once played out here.
