Beck Isle Museum
The Beck Isle Museum of Rural Life stands in Pickering, North Yorkshire, inside a grand Regency mansion with farm outbuildings. The Grade II* listed building holds displays that recreate period shops such as a barber’s, blacksmith’s, chemist’s, cobbler’s, cooper’s, printer’s, draper’s, dairy, and hardware store. A Victorian pub parlour and a costume gallery add to the period atmosphere. The museum’s collections include thousands of photographs and pieces of photographic equipment once owned by Sydney Smith. Sydney Smith, a noted local photographer born in 1884, overcame childhood measles-related sight loss to build a successful photographic business in the early 1900s. Sydney Smith’s work, spanning the 1920s to the late 1940s, offers a detailed view of Pickering and surrounding villages. His images capture local people, events, and landscapes, providing a vivid record of rural life more than half a century ago. During World War I, Maud Smith ran the photography shop while Sydney served in the forces. After the war, he turned to running a garage on Park Street but kept photographing in his spare time. His collection was recognised in 2000 for presenting a remarkable picture of the Ryedale area. Visitors walk through rooms arranged to show how shops and homes looked in past centuries. The costume gallery displays garments that reflect everyday life and special occasions. Photographs from Sydney Smith’s collection line the walls, showing streets, markets, and families long gone. The museum’s setting in a fine Regency mansion adds to the sense of stepping back in time. Surrounding farm outbuildings hint at the rural economy that once shaped the area. The displays invite close inspection of tools, signs, and everyday objects used by local trades.
