Seemannskirche

The Seemannskirche stands in Prerow on the Darß peninsula in the county of Vorpommern-Rügen. Built between 1726 and 1728 as a timber-framed church, it was later rebuilt in brick between 1740 and 1830. Its wooden tower, added in 1727, once guided sailors along this stretch of coast. Pastor Martin Henrici served as its first minister, and later figures such as Joachim Gottfried Danckwardt and Johannes Runze left their mark on the community. In 1872 a severe storm surge flooded the village, but the church and its manse narrowly escaped damage. Paintings by Marianne von Werefkin and Alexej Jawlensky in 1911 brought wider attention to the building. The church contains notable works of art and maritime memorials. Above the door hangs a 17th-century altarpiece donated by the father of a drowned seaman. The baroque pulpit altar, made in Stralsund in 1728, features a clock with two glass faces. Votive ship models from the 18th and 19th centuries line the walls, including the English frigate Peter Kraft and the large Napoleon. A brass chandelier in the nave bears the names of Prerow farmers and fishermen who gave it in 1733. The organ, built in 1848 and altered in 1960, still plays in services. Visitors enter a three-aisled brick hall with a wooden tower topped by oak shingles. Inside, the late-baroque baptismal chapel and the altar’s glass chandelier, donated by a shipwrecked crew, draw the eye. Outside, old gravestones on the walls tell family stories. The churchyard wall still bears a flood mark from the 1872 storm. Today it serves both Lutheran and Catholic congregations, preserving the seafaring heritage of the Darß.
