Metternich Castle

Burg Metternich stands on a hill above the Moselle in the village of Beilstein. Its ruins overlook the river and the steep vineyards that climb the opposite bank. The castle began as Bilstein in the 12th century, long before it took the name Metternich. For four centuries it belonged to the Counts von Nassau-Dillenburg, who built its towers and halls. In 1637 the estate passed to the Metternich family, who gave it their name. Klemens von Metternich, the famous Austrian foreign minister, was its last private owner. The castle’s story is tied to Europe’s diplomacy and war. Its first mention came in 1268, yet some historians believe an earlier fortress stood here by 1129. In 1689 French troops set fire to the castle during the Nine Years’ War, leaving only the outer walls and gatehouse. The Metternichs never rebuilt it, so the ruins remain as they were three centuries ago. The site still carries the marks of both medieval power and 17th-century destruction. Visitors walk along the crumbling curtain wall and peer through archways that once held great halls. From the terrace the Moselle curves past Beilstein’s slate-roofed houses and rows of Riesling vines. The village below keeps the same narrow lanes and timber-framed inns that Metternich’s guests would have known. The castle’s gatehouse, with its pointed arch and machicolations, shows how the fortress once defended the valley. On clear days the view stretches kilometres along the river to where the hills flatten into the plain.
