Halliwell Jones Stadium

Halliwell Jones Stadium stands on a former Tetley Walker brewery site just north of Warrington town centre. It is the home ground of the Warrington Wolves rugby league club and has hosted major rugby league events including Challenge Cup semi-finals and games from the 2013 and 2021 Rugby League World Cups. The stadium opened in February 2004 after the club moved from the old Wilderspool Stadium, which had become unfit for use. Its pitch measures 120 by 74 metres, wider than most modern grounds, to allow the expansive style of rugby the club wanted. Two stands include terraces, a rare feature in newer stadiums, while the others are all-seater with hospitality boxes. The stadium is recognised for its safety record and capacity growth. After a 2011 fire in the West Stand led to temporary evacuations, the club expanded the East Stand corners to add 2,000 spaces. Capacity rose from 15,000 to 15,693 as safety certificates allowed, with plans to reach 22,000 if needed. A record crowd of 15,026 attended a match in April 2023. The ground also honours local sporting legends: a Brian Bevan statue and mural, the Jack Fish corner and Mike Gregory Way outside. In 2025 the stadium will be renamed for one match in honour of darts champion Luke Littler. Visitors enter a modern ground with four distinct stands. The North Stand holds hospitality suites, changing rooms and dugouts. The East Stand sits behind the goal line and contains seated boxes, while its corners were filled in to increase capacity. The South Stand runs along the touchline with terraces, a scoreboard and TV gantry. The West Stand is terraced for away fans, with plans to extend it further. Outside, tributes to Warrington’s rugby history stand alongside the stadium’s name, given by Halliwell Jones, a local automotive group.
