Windmill in Dittrichshütte

The tower windmill in Dittrichshütte stands in the village of the same name, on the edge of the Thuringian Forest and Thuringian Slate Mountains. Built in 1865, it replaced an earlier mill and became the landmark of this small community. The mill worked until 1954, grinding grain for local bakers and farmers. After decades of neglect, a group of enthusiasts restored the windmill between 1974 and 1981. Their effort saved the building from collapse and returned it to working order. Today the mill houses a small museum that explains how the machinery worked and how flour was produced in the region. Inside, visitors see the restored grinding stones and the great sails that once turned in the wind. The museum also tells the story of the last miller and his family, who lived in the attached house. Outside, the village square offers views across the plateau towards the surrounding hills.
