Pfarrkirche hl. Kunigunde, Mürzzuschlag

The parish church of Mürzzuschlag stands in the town centre of Mürzzuschlag in the upper Mürz valley of Styria. It is dedicated to Saint Kunigunde and has carried this dedication since the 18th century, though earlier records show it was once named for Saint Nicholas. The present building replaced an older church in 1774, yet its Gothic tower from the late 15th century still rises above the nave. The church has been protected as a listed monument for decades, preserving both its exterior and interior. The church’s architecture blends late-Baroque style with earlier Gothic elements. The broad nave has three bays with rounded niches and side chapels, while the single-bay choir is set back and vaulted in the same manner. The six-storey south-west tower shows barque plasterwork and a distinctive onion dome topped by a lantern. Inside, the organ by Christian Erler from 2010 has twenty-five stops across two manuals and pedal, with modern mechanical and electrical systems. A set of stained-glass windows from 1890 fills the south wall with coloured light. Visitors find a calm interior of plaster vaults and smooth arches, lit by tall windows. The west gallery has a sweeping balustrade, and the tower chapel displays deep ribbed vaulting. Outside, the south wall bears the coat of arms of Styria with its red-and-white shield and ducal hat. Old gravestones from 1557 and the 18th century are set into the outer walls, marking the church’s long history.
