Adelegg

The Adelegg is a hilltop site in the Schmalegger Tobel near Zogenweiler. A ring of earthen ramparts and a deep ditch once enclosed the crest of the Adelegg ridge. The main wall still rises clearly above the surrounding ground, with a ditch cut into the slope below it. The Adelegg’s defences were built to command the narrow valley below. A smaller outer bank of spoil lies in front of the ditch, adding a second line of protection. Archaeologists recognise these features as typical of a small Iron Age hillfort. Visitors walk a quiet forest path to the ridge. The ramparts stretch along the hilltop, offering long views over the valley. The site sits within mixed woodland, so the only sounds are wind and birds. A local mill stands at the foot of the slope, linking the fort to the everyday life of the past.
