Römermuseum Obernburg

The Römermuseum Obernburg stands in the Lower Wall Street below the old town, a short walk from the Main. It holds the finds from the old Roman fort and nearby settlement. A model in the entrance shows how the town looked in Roman times. The museum’s pride is its stone collection on the ground floor. Among the pieces are inscribed stones from the camp’s commanding officers, a building inscription from the cohort headquarters, and fragments of several Jupiter-giant columns. Outside stands a full reconstruction of one of these columns. Inscriptions donated by detachments of the Legio XXII Primigenia from Mainz show they worked as lumber teams in the Spessart and Odenwald forests and along the Main. Similar stones have been found at Stockstadt and Trennfurt. The basement displays a Mithras stone with a recreated shrine, while the mezzanine shows grave and votive stones that reveal Roman beliefs about gods and death. Upstairs the focus shifts to small finds: tools, brooches, cosmetic and medical instruments, everyday pots and coins. A fourth-century glass bowl with Christian symbols is one of the earliest such pieces in the region. A large room is kept free for temporary exhibitions. The museum once planned to expand into a major regional centre for the Main Limes and Roman law, but the plans were halted after a citizens’ vote.
