Thor's Cave

Thor’s Cave is a natural cavern set in a steep limestone crag above the Manifold Valley in Staffordshire. The cave’s arched entrance stands seventy-five metres wide and ten metres high, visible from the valley floor eighty metres below. A second entrance called the West Window leads to Thor’s Fissure Cavern, a smaller cave beneath the main arch. The cave lies beside the Manifold Way, a former railway line now used as a walking path. Visitors follow an easy stepped route to reach the site and enjoy wide views across the valley. The cave is known locally as Thor’s House Cavern and was once linked to the Leek and Manifold Valley Light Railway. Archaeologists found human and animal remains, stone tools, pottery, amber beads and bronze items inside the cave and its fissure. These finds suggest the site was used from the end of the Palaeolithic period and more heavily in the Iron Age and Roman times. At least seven burials have been estimated from the evidence uncovered. Rock climbers began using the crag in the early 1950s after explorations by Joe Brown and others. The British Mountaineering Council lists eleven limestone routes, ranging from Very Severe to E7 grades, with some bolted sport climbs added later. The cave has appeared in films such as Hawk the Slayer and The Lair of the White Worm. It also served as a backdrop for The Verve’s 1993 video for “Blue” and the cover of their album A Storm in Heaven. Winterfylleth used the cave for their band photo on the 2020 album The Reckoning Dawn. The surrounding Manifold Valley offers quiet walking beside the old railway line, with further limestone tors nearby at Beeston and Wetton.
