Church of St James

St James’ Church stands in the village of Riddings in Derbyshire. Built in the early 19th century for the Oakes family, it replaced an earlier dissenters’ meeting place. The church was designed by Francis Octavius Bedford and cost £200 to construct. Local dissenters refused to pay the bishop’s fee, so consecration came a year after completion. A chancel was added in the 1880s, along with new furnishings and a reredos donated by a Derby man. The church belongs to a joint parish with Christ Church in nearby Ironville. Its pipe organ dates from around 1850 and was enlarged in 1885 by Charles Lloyd. The organ remains in use today. The building itself is Grade II listed, marking its recognised importance. The interior reflects both its early Victorian origins and later enlargements. Inside, visitors find a simple nave with clear lines and good natural light. The chancel extension adds space for services and music. The organ occupies a prominent position at the west end. Original fittings were removed during the 1880s restoration, leaving a plain but dignified interior. The church’s exterior is built of local stone, blending with the surrounding village.
