John Paul Jones Cottage Museum

The John Paul Jones Cottage Museum stands on the Arbigland Estate near Kirkbean in Dumfries and Galloway. It is the birthplace of John Paul Jones, a hero of the American Revolutionary War and founder of the United States Navy. Born in 1747, Jones’s father worked as a gardener on the estate. The cottage has been restored to look as it did in the 1747, offering a glimpse into life during that time. Audio presentations play inside, bringing the past to life with stories of daily routines. The museum honours Jones’s naval career with exhibits and a reconstructed cabin from his ship, the Bonhomme Richard. One display tells the story of his victory over HMS Serapis at the Battle of Flamborough Head in 1779. A visitor centre includes video presentations and further exhibits about his life and achievements. The restoration effort was led by retired admirals Jerauld Wright and Sir Nigel Henderson, who worked to return the cottage to its original condition. Visitors find a simple stone cottage with rooms arranged as they would have been in the 18th century. The reconstructed ship cabin adds a sense of Jones’s seafaring life. Outside, the Arbigland Estate provides a peaceful rural setting near the Solway Firth. The museum offers a quiet space to reflect on the life of a key figure in naval history.
