Abbot's Tower

Abbot’s Tower stands in a quiet field near New Abbey in Dumfries and Galloway. Built in the late 16th century as a refuge, it is a small L-plan tower house with walls nearly 1.2 metres thick. The tower once had one room on each floor, each with a fireplace and a garderobe in the corner. John Broun erected the tower from stone taken from nearby Sweetheart Abbey, where his uncle had been abbot. The Maxwell family, the most powerful in the area, supported the Catholic priest Gilbert Broun who lived here. After the Scottish Reformation the tower remained a centre of Roman Catholic resistance until Broun’s arrest in 1605. The structure was reduced to a ruin by the end of the 19th century, with only parts of the walls standing at about ten metres high. Archaeologists found traces of outbuildings and the remains of defensive barmkin walls during early 1990s excavations. The west wall and staircase wing survived almost intact, while other sections had collapsed and their stones removed. Restoration in the 1990s returned the tower to use as a private home while preserving its historic fabric. The tower’s simple rectangular plan and thick rubble walls show how a 16th-century refuge was built to withstand attack. Visitors today see a restored tower with its original thick walls and small internal chambers still visible. The staircase wing leads to the upper floor, where fireplaces mark the positions of former living spaces. Outside, faint traces of the barmkin walls outline the tower’s defensive enclosure. The surrounding field is peaceful, offering a clear view of the tower’s restored silhouette against the Galloway hills. The site quietly recalls the struggles of Catholic faith and the Maxwell family’s defiance during Scotland’s religious upheavals.
