Villa Rustica

A Roman country estate stands on the southern edge of Schondorf village beside Lake Ammersee. The villa rustica was uncovered in 1924 by Heinrich Blendinger working with local pupils. It dates from the Roman imperial period and is now protected as an archaeological monument in the Landkreis Landsberg am Lech. The remains include a small Roman bath-house built close to the lake shore. In 2005 archaeologists marked the building’s outline with gravel and placed a commemorative stele on the site. The simple layout shows the typical rooms of a rural Roman villa. Visitors walk along a gravel path that follows the marked ground-plan of the bath-house. A low stone stele stands at the water’s edge, explaining what once stood there. The view across the lake and the quiet village green makes it easy to picture the scene two thousand years ago.
